Our programme of athlete development operates with the long term development of the athlete in mind; seeking to enhance their physical abilities, equip them with a foundation of skills and develop behavioural qualities that will help them to live fit and healthy lives now and into their adult lives. And, if along the way they develop a particular passion for our sport, then we will support them on their journey and help them towards fulfilling their potential.
We do this by setting them developmentally appropriate challenges in three primary areas:
- Behavioural Qualities
- Physical Development
- Athletics Skills
We call these
Our 3 Pillars
and each area has a progressive set of standards.
Athletes that specialise too early have a greater chance of developing repetition related injuries. This is particularly an issue while athletes are growing, as this may affect their physical development (England Athletics).
